Anatomy gem Posted by

This app is a huge step up in performance from the other anatomy app I was using. I have already removed the other one. It opens quickly, navigation is silky smooth without even one stutter, and everything I have seen so far is spot on. It opens fast and you can get to work right away. It also has a smaller memory footprint than the other one I used... nice for my cramped iPhone with only 16GB. This is easily the most beautiful app I own and my current favorite. I am an anatomy nut, and I also use this for education in a therapy clinic. The in app purchases are amazing - incredible content for a bargain. My only regret is my iPhone screen is small and I don't have an iPad yet. But this is a universal app, so when I get the iPad (saving up now) it will go there no problem. This is the first app I will download when I get my iPad! The company itself has great, (actually incredible) personal communication. Very friendly, professional and helpful. I hope that as they grow (and they will grow) they can keep that element of their business intact. It has made me a huge fan. The female anatomy and urogenital systems are there with version 5, and they are fantastic. It's great to know that the company is actively working to better the app and providing regular updates. Highly recommended for clinicians, anatomy students, and anatomy nerds like myself. *Update* There is a small bug with notes accepting voice recognition on iPhone 5 but I have been told that the team is aware. I am sure they will get that ironed out in a future update. I will update this review when it gets fixed. Typing notes is slower but that's ok. Performance of this app is wicked smooth even on an old iPhone 5. Keep up the amazing work 3D4Medical! PS - I just noticed the reviewer name- I will change that when I get home. Lol. That was my wife!

If you're looking for an anatomy app, this is the one Posted by

I have had this app for one day and I already feel comfortable with navigating and selecting multiple parts of the body. This app runs extremely smooth and gives you just about any view that you need of sections of the body or organs within a system. It is very simple to hide and show features in order to get the view or angle you need while understanding the connecting structures. And once you select a structure it gives you a working definition and tells you to which system it belongs. This app also gives you the option to isolate and section structures in order to observe from any of the lateral, posterior, anterior, superior, and inferior views. While your viewing any view it also gives you the option to draw and annotate then save the image for later. Another great feature that makes this app valuable for learning is the quiz feature that allows you to isolate and learn the pieces of each system all the way down to microscopic nerves and arteries. Within the quiz you can do multiple choice or drag and drop in order to master complex anatomy. I can already tell that I'm beginning to comprehend more about the smaller facets in the skeletal system and nervous system. If you are looking for an app that will make understanding anatomy simple and enjoyable this is the app. Either if you just want to understand your body before you go see your doctor or you want to become a doctor this app will give you the most detailed complete understanding of the human body you will ever need.

No brainer, this is a must buy Posted by

There is a common misconception that to do well in anatomy, you need to make flashcards. In my opinion, this could not be more incorrect. To understand anatomy you need to understand the purpose of the origins, how the insertions dictate actions and how the action interact with other muscle groups. Flashcards can't tell you this. And flashcards can't help you understand how all of this changes in the face of injury. Being able to manipulate the anatomy with your fingertips, to be able to clearly see demarcated origins and insertions sites, and tracing blood supplies and innervations to their roots is so valuable to actually understanding anatomy. And understanding anatomy is way more time efficient than memorizing it. As part of my anatomy class, I had to purchase a $380 computer program to do half the amount of processing that this app can do. Furthermore that program is restricted to being utilized by a CD-ROM (which is so fabulous considering I have a MacBook air). Case closed. This is the monopoly of all anatomy programs out there and if I could return the CD ROM anatomy program I would. Not acquiring this app is simply doing a disservice to your academic pursuits. Hurry up and buy this app ASAP to make time up for time lost not using it. (that's how I felt when I bought it, and I'm incredibly frugal!)

Fix the Info Box Please! Posted by

Great app with one very annoying design flaw that costs one star. I’m a doctor and longtime college educator teaching Anatomy and Physiology. I love this app. What I don’t love is the information box that pops up every time I select a bone or muscle or other piece of anatomy. The information is great, but there should be an option to disable the popup to allow an instructor to quiz students without the answer appearing on the screen. The info box also superimposes itself over important structures, and must be moved manually every single time to view the anatomy. This is very irksome when moving from structure to related structure. My recommendation to the developer is to provide an option in the Control menu or Settings to toggle the popup info box on or off, and also a second option to allow ‘fixing’ the info box to a particular location on the screen so that the info box, when toggled on, doesn’t overshadow the anatomy in the middle of the screen. In other words, provide an option that would let you place the info box in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, where it would stay put until moved to a different screen location. Fix this well-intentioned info box from hades, and you’ve got my vote for five stars!

Perfect for the Layperson, Professional in the Medical Field, Educational Field and Parents. Posted by

This resource has been so helpful, in so many ways, and is a steal at these prices I see for various packages. I deal with chronic pain, and have for several years. The different problems I have were seemingly impossible to diagnose. After seeing many Primary Care and Specialists, and not getting closer to any answers, I began to do thorough research on my own. When I first learned about 'trigger points' (there's a great app just for myofascial trigger points as well), I began self treatment. I am able to use this app when working on myself or others. It provided logical answers once I did receive my first diagnosis, which I then had surgery on last year. I've been able to see and show others where my neck was operated on, etc.. Also, this I'd the perfect kind of app to take to a PC or Specialist, so you can be very clear as to where your symptoms are appearing. We also teach our kids, and this app is perfect for that, and I have relatives in the professional field that could definitely use the accurate information and presentation style to help their patients understand what is going on. Can't say enough good things about it. And it's only gotten better with each update.

Very Nice for Pros and Novices Posted by

I really like the look and feel in Essential Anatomy, but it can be difficult to get to some data. I finally figured out how to get the skeletal system to go away, but after touring around with it off, I couldn't find now to turn it back on (it had disappeared from the Control Menu). It would be nice if it was just another side button like Urogenital or Skin. I also haven't been able to figure out how to see some smaller internal items like the inner ear. I know it's a group of nerves, muscles, and bones, but turning those all on means the outer skull is in they way. Without bones, I miss some significant parts of the ear. Slicing doesn't seem to work there, but I'd have to be able to see where I'm slicing anyway. As I use this for my personal edification, I find that getting to the basic overview is very intuitive. It's easy to get around and see the "big picture." And selecting an item or multiple items is very nice, too. I can see what I've picked, but the item doesn't look obscured. This is a real plus. The whole app feels like it was built for the platform and not simply transferred over from a printed source. I look forward to its further development.

Spectacular App Posted by

This is a remarkable anatomy app. It's incredibly easy to use, yet reveals a plethora of visual structures - all with the ability to rotate, enlarge, and otherwise manipulate these images to your hearts content. Plus, there are icons you can press for further information, videos, etc. When I showed the Essential Anatomy App to my friend (an MD), he could barely put my iPad down, remarking that it was so addictive and the interactive images so glorious he could imagine spending hours exploring it for pure pleasure. My only wish is that 3D4Medical would consider veterinary apps as well, specifically for horses, dogs and cats. There is no animal anatomy app I'm aware that comes even close to this company's breathtaking fidelity, brilliant imagery, broad scope and ease of use. Veterinarians and Vet students - please join me in letting 3D4Medical know there is a market for comparative anatomy software on this level!

If you only get one anatomy app, get this one! Posted by

Essential Anatomy is just that, essential, for medical, PA, nursing students etc. It has become indispensable in class and lab during my first few years of medical school. Anatomy lab tip: iPads work surprisingly well inside ziplock bags with nitrile-gloved fingers. In the clinic, Essential Anatomy transforms into a wonderful patient education tool. Being able to clearly show the relevant anatomy changes the [MSK, neurological etc] exam for many patients from a mysterious combination of modern dance and calisthenics to a conversation. Essential Anatomy allows patients to follow along with your exam and understand your clinical reasoning. I know Essential Anatomy is more expensive than many other apps out there. But it's comprehensiveness, clarity and ease of use (not to mention continual development and upgrades) make Essential Anatomy well worth the money!

Fixes & additions needed Posted by

As far as fixes go, it's really crucial that you fix the transparency issues. When you set certain muscles to Fade, their translucent state looks perfect while the muscle is highlighted. You can see right underneath the muscle. If you deselect it though, certain areas underneath, the rib cage and connective tissue systems for example, become COMPLETELY see through. The pectoralis minor is a good one to see how awkward this is. Pressing backspace on Pin names also sets the keyboard to Capitalize, which is annoying on an iPhone. I make typos on the tiny keys. A female model would be an invaluable addition. I'd like a simple way to reactivate a hidden muscle once deselected as well. Otherwise, no complaints. It's helpful. Can't verify that there's missing or incorrect information, but if accurate, it should be remedied.

Beyond great, but missing some things Posted by

As far as the way the app is structured and the features it has, this is absolutely essential for any GROSS anatomy student (for those complaining of the lack of histology elements). The muscular and skeletal add-ons are also a must. That being said, as amazing as this app is... Why are some muscles missing? I see no reason for such a complete 3D atlas to be missing things such as the levator palpebrae superioris, levator & tensor veli palatini, tensor tympani, stapedius, palatoglossus, palatopharyngeus, salpingopharyngeus, or musculus uvulae muscles? That's only in head musclulature to boot. I can only assume I'll find more amiss as I continue exploring vasculature and nerve branches. In short, the app has all the necessary elements to master the human body, it's just... Lacking parts of the human body.

Simple, Intuitive, Unlimited! Posted by

I'm simply a high schooler looking to learn more about anatomy in order to best appreciate my body and my human heritage! The possibilities of exploration due to the fantastic accurate modeling, many body systems, and easy to use though powerful set of tools are nearly unlimited! Thank you developers! You don't need to be interested in or studying medicine in order to become completely immersed in the knowledge and beauty of this app! The app is also 100% smooth and free of bugs and hiccups on the iPad Air 2! I would recommend this app for all ages to anyone and everyone who enjoys learning, exploration, or is just curious about the human body and it's complicated structures and functions!

Very basic Skeleton and no joints Posted by

The paid version $24.99 has exactly the same-very basic skeleton as free version. There is no information on Joints at all. You will need to purchase them separately at 5.99$ each. To me, bone structure and joints are "essential", I'm disappointed and surprised that neither are included for the price I paid for. I contacted the company, they were very responsive, patient and explained to me their ads did indicate the content. I was refunded for my purchase. Great customer services! In terms of the app itself: the graph is very good, easy to learn and navigate. As long as you understand what you're getting, then it's probably the best app. you can get in today's market.

Many thanks for the update! Posted by

This app has always been a favorite and when I received the new IPhone 6 plus this was one of the first apps that I wanted to open but unfortunately it crashed every time I tried to open it. I sent an email to the developers with no expectation to receive a response. To my surprise I was contacted almost immediately and reassured that a fix was on the way. The good news is that an update has been issued and the app works better than ever. I can now open multiple layers at once which was not possible on my previous phone. My thanks to Nicola for being there because that kind of PR makes a huge difference. This is a great app!

Great New Content Posted by

Great to see new content added to this app.... Both a new system and a couple of in app purchases which are great value! This is the app to own if you need to learn or teach anatomy. If you have bought the in app purchase the "muscle plus" or"skeleton plus" they are amazing tools but you must first isolate the structures Take the time to learn this app- There is so much in it! ... Select the structure first then press the "isolate" button to use these amazing tools Great job 3d4medical....thanks for the updates iOS 8 update works great! Love the landscape feature on my new iPhone 6 plus!

It is that good Posted by

I was so impressed with the free skeleton app they made, I was hoping the full anatomy app would meet me needs. So far everything I was hoping "I wish they had included 'this or that' function", I have discovered! They thought of everything! You'll be amazed by the level of detail, accuracy, and information in this app. I am an MRI tech and being able to use a 3D model that I can customize helps me in my work. The control menu (a selectable list of all anatomy) is a great feature, but only in accessible on an iPad. It would be nice if you could use the control menu on the iPhone.

Great app for clinicians Posted by

Pictures are worth a 1000 words and this app delivers. I have been using this app to help educate patients on a variety of clinical sports medicine and orthopedic conditions. The app is very detailed and easy to navigate, annotate and share images. I use both versions windows on the laptop but mainly the iPad version primarily due it's portability. I strongly recommend this app for clinicians and healthcare providers to efficiently enhance communication and patient understanding of the clinical picture.

Best anatomy app! Posted by

I found this app as it is the one that my massage therapy teacher has installed on the iPads for the program. So I bought it for my iPhone and it has been extremely helpful in learning the bones and muscles vital to massage therapy. This app is far superior to any anatomy book because I can see every bone and muscle from every angle. This is important to massage therapists because we work muscles from varying angles. Overall, it is a complete and detailed anatomy app and very cool to use.

Helpful! Posted by

I love the quizzes I love the ease of accessibility, and it's really helped me each day remember just a little bit more and keep it. I'm an artist but I plan on taking an anatomy course my next semester of college for a nursing major. This is just what I needed to get a head start. It occasionally freezes when I switch to multiple choice quizzes but that is usually fixed with an app restart. Thank you again! As an artist and a nursing major!

Needs ability to view in cross section Posted by

This app is truly amazing. As a medical student I use this app very often to study and visualize structures as I learn them. However the app would be perfect if it also had the ability to freely move in a cross section view to practice what MRIs would look like. That will help with bringing 3d and 2d views together. And I can't imagine it's a very difficult task to program this into the model. Thank you very much for such a great tool.

Great app, but one major flaw Posted by

This is an amazing app that I use daily for my medical school anatomy course. Except it has one MAJOR FLAW: every time you minimize the program and open it again, it completely restarts. This means that every time you press the home button on your iPad or switch programs, you lose the view you had or the muscles you had tagged. This is a major problem that seems like it could be easily fixed. DEVELOPERS: please address this glitch!

Good but needs more options by emanc1pat0r 2016-09-11

Quiz options need to be better. Also, the quiz is not randomized- it is the same preset item one after the other every time. It's not randomized and this is a huge fatal flaw. I see a review from 3 years ago that also mentions a similar problem with the quiz option- this issue has been around for a long time now, I hope you are aware of it, and aware that it was one of the reasons why many people purchase the app. It needs to be addressed because the quiz function is literally useless in its current form. Further, applying tags/answers to the quiz structures - is overly cumbersome and time consuming. It often doesn't recognize the structure I'm pointing it on until it's placed "just right." I feel like the quiz itself could have some better preset options regarding common anatomical areas of study, and when the quiz does start, the figure should show (as close as possible) to exactly what you'd see in a lab practical. Eg not just picking out 1 muscle from the 5 that have been isolated for you in this particular view. More muscles/etc should be shown. An option to NOT use the preset answers should also be used. Eg., I would love to use this next to a piece of paper and write down what the tagged structure is, as in a real practical, and then press a button to see the answer and move to the next question. Can we get some preset options to select for study/review? Eg the standard anatomy textbook locations of superficial/deep back, upper limb, etc. which present the material by "compartment." Especially would be helpful for smaller screens... Some other things for improvement...are joints in here? Eg synovial joints? More ideas for consideration: How about an option to see what happens when you tag/create a lesion on a particular part of the brachial plexus? What muscles are no longer innervated (as shown by a color, isolation, etc.) - and what musculocutaneous/sensory effects will you see (eg then present a skin view of areas of loss of sensation. Can we please see the blood and nervous supply to the muscles we isolate? How about the ability to customize when we isolate something too? (Eg muscles around it). Finally- this would truly be huge- it would be cool if we could import a text list (or whatever) of the structures we are interested in investigating, and having the app automatically propagate the image with said structures (and whatever is deep to them, attached to them/blah blah.). The current method of selecting structures 1 by 1 to isolate is not useful when you have an anatomy list of 50-100 things you need to know. Then, the ability to quiz yourself on those items, (and even present the more superficial muscles to those items as reflected), would be groundbreaking. This is a really great app, I just think it could use some more functionality and needs to include some nuances that standard anatomy textbooks present though.

good but missing valuable info by breusch91 2014-10-30

as my title states I really like this app, but it's missing basic things that it should have. - no female model - almost no bony landmarks - some ligaments missing bony landmarks: it does not break the bones down into their landmarks, it may say x originates at y and attaches at z but if you click on the bone it will not have those landmarks for you to actually click on and see ligaments missing: for example the knee, unless I'm doing it wrong they don't allow you any way to see the meniscus , acl, or pcl. all very important structures to the knee, acl and meniscus injuries being very common I'd think this would be important. overall I like the app, don't get me wrong. it has many great features like the ability to isolate certain structures and only show certain layers. but the few things that it's missing should be in here as it's pretty basic stuff that most people would like to see.

Much work needed by Medicalstudent91667 2014-09-19

Pros: Easy to navigate, and well defined nerves and vasculature. Cons: At the time of this review, this app has no female anatomy at all, is missing anatomy of the special senses, and doesn't really have the detail I want as an anatomy student. It also crashes when too many organ systems are turned on. Some reviewers have written that that is alright because there is no need to have multiple systems on, but it is honestly a major pain when you are trying to study anatomical relations and the course of arteries and nerves. For a $25 app, it is unacceptable to be missing so much major anatomy and for the app to be so unstable. Especially considering that this is the 4th iteration of the app. For the same price you can get the anatomy atlas from Visible Body that includes everything that this app is missing, and so far it runs without crashing.

Not detailed enough for College Anatomy students by llhgrey 2015-01-24

I downloaded this app as a study aid for a physical therapy anatomy course, which requires extensive knowledge of the muscle and skeletal systems. The app is very good for muscles - it allows you to isolate each muscle and there is a text description of origin and insertion points. However, it falls short regarding action simulations so the student can see how each muscle affects body movement. The skeletal system section is very disappointing - you can identify each bone, but the app does not illustrate the various grooves, tubercles and other geometric landmarks that are core to any Anatomy course. Even after paying $25 for the app, I still have to resort to my Anatomy atlas and Google to study for exams.

Very Disappointed!!! by Bigloo2003 2014-09-24

I just purchased the Essential Anatomy 4. Then I purchased the 4 apps bundles on my ITunes for $18.99. They stop the purchase at the last seconds and they bumped the price up when I tried to repurchase it. If I had known they were going to pull that stunt, I would not have made the first purchase. My first intention was to buy the Visible Body's apps. Since this app seems like a good deal, I walked right in their trap. I felt like I was bamboozled. It's a shame that they're using these kind of tactics. I learned my lesson. And you wonder why a lot of smart people download these apps online without having to pay for them? I'm not upset about the money. I'm disappointed with their tactics

Amazing App, One Glaring Problem by AEAMAcuTurtles 2014-10-15

Let me start by saying that this is an amazing app that is an invaluable tool for learning anatomy. I will be using this app in clinic with my future patients as an instructional tool. Now, the glaring problem I have with this app is that it only provides male anatomy. An app that is as detailed and information rich as this one should not be ignoring the anatomy of over half of the population. In my future profession, many of my patients will be female. I need a visual tool that teaches both male and female anatomy. I'm hoping that updated versions of this app will be more complete.

A little disappointing by Bweezy. 2015-09-10

I am in a college anatomy class and this helps some but not a whole lot especially not for 25 dollars or however much it was. It doesn't have histology (cells and tissues) which was a big first test I had and it would have been nice to use on this app. Also it doesn't show all of the sutures and holes in the bones which we need to know also. I haven't gotten to look through everything yet but if the rest of the app is like this I will probably delete it bc it's not as helpful as I need it to be. I would expect that from a free app but it was quiet expensive.

Great, but missing important info. by Kellmt 2014-10-31

Adequate. Great 3-D images. I like the control I have with the model. However, it does not have a female model, it's missing bony landmarks, and, as the app's greatest weakness, the animations are lacking in quality. I would like to see 3-D animations, while having the same control of adding and removing anatomy as the static images. I have another anatomy application on my iPad as well as this one, and I would love to see Essential Anatomy go above and beyond on their next update so I can delete the other and use Essential Anatomy exclusively.

Unusable on IOS8 by TheSavageR 2014-10-09

My friend has this app on his device running iOS 7 and it is extremely useful and runs smoothly, BUT... Unfortunately on iOS 8 for some reason it very buggy. You can't even see half of the menu options. If you are familiar with the app you can tap on a blank area to get to what you want... Kind of... Switching from portrait to landscape view makes the options on the right completely disappear off the side of the screen. Also if does not fill the top portion of the screen. The opening image does, but the functional part of the app does not.

bad choice by sadms1 2014-08-30

I had high hopes for this app, none of them met. I am a first year med student and I do not recommend this app if you are interested in actually studying anatomy.. any atlas will be much more useful. The quiz feature is absolutely awful on this app... forget quizzing an entire area like the back/limb/etc. You are limited to only one tissue type at a time, so forget about quizzing that will show any type of tissue relationships. Worst 25 dollars I have ever spent. I wish there were some way to get a refund.

Hats off to the developer team. This is a superb reference tool beautifully designed and anatomically accurate. By far the best human anatomy app I have used. Thank you for the great work!! UPDATE: Unresponsive icons in side bars with update to iOS 9.0.2 on 6s. Please fix!

It's okay for muscles, but my anatomy course now is learning the heart. Can't learn heart from this app or the computer one unless your class covers only the surface of the heart. Cannot cross section organs. Had to download a separate one.

I want my money back by mawrterlavie 2015-01-28

I have an iPad mini. The app crashes even when I use it in optimal settings. Please give me my money back. Do not download this app, I am a medical student and can't use it without it crashing and shutting down in 2 minutes or less!

This app was amazing when I first got it but after I got the new iPhone 6 it won't let me use anything. So its pointless to have now.

Similar to the free version. No point in buying the full thing because it doesn't help more
